How to qualify for the New York Marathon

You have to be a member of the NYRR to qualify automatically for the New York Marathon.  If you joined NYRR on or before January 31, 2008, you remain a current member, and you completed nine (9) qualifying NYRR races in 2008 and will have volunteered at one race before January 31, 2009, you have met the requirements for eligibility for guaranteed entry for the ING New York City Marathon 2009.  In the likely event that you fail to meet the NYRR’s strict criteria and have failed to attain a place in this years running of the New York Marathon you may want to consider running on behalf of your favourite charity who are allocated guaranteed places.  Below is a list of charities with guaranteed places up for grabs!

  • Get Kids Going! is a National charity which gives disabled children and young people – up to the age of 26 yrs – the wonderful opportunity of participating in sport.
  • The NSPCC lobby and campaign for better laws and policies to protect children.
  • Mind is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales. They work to create a better life for everyone with experience of mental distress.
  • The Children’s Society is a leading national charity, driven by the belief that every child deserves a good childhood.
  • The British Heart Foundation vision is of a world in which people do not die prematurely of heart disease achieved through pioneering research, vital prevention activity and ensuring quality care and support for everyone living with heart disease.
  • The MS Society is the UK’s largest charity for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – about 85,000 people in the UK.
  • Help the Aged is an international charity fighting to free older people from poverty, isolation and neglect.
  • WRVS provides a range of practical services to help and support older people to live well, maintain their independence and play a part in their local community.
  • Marie Curie Cancer Care is one of the UK’s largest charities. It was established in 1948 – the same year as the NHS – and marks its 60th anniversary in 2008.
  • British Red Cross are a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.
  • Asthma UK is the charity dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the 5.4 million people in the UK whose lives are affected by asthma.
  • Bowel Cancer UK aims to save lives by raising awareness of bowel cancer, campaigning for best treatment and care and providing practical support and advice.
